Badger Hollow Network Upgrades Project

Project overview

American Transmission Co. is constructing new electric transmission line infrastructure to connect with the Badger Hollow Solar Farm generation facility in Iowa County, Wis. The electric modifications include:

  • Expanding the Highland Substation in the town of Eden.
  • Constructing new double-circuit 69,000-volt transmission line south from the Highland Substation to connect with line Y-138 in the town of Eden.
  • Uprating the transmission line between Highland Substation and the Spring Green Substation by replacing or modifying select existing structures.

Need for the project

The Badger Hollow solar generating facility is anticipated to output 300 megawatts of solar energy. To transport that capacity onto the grid, the facilities require a high-voltage electric interconnection. ATC’s Badger Hollow Network project provides that capability and is necessary to address thermal overloads and generator stability issues under single contingency conditions.

The estimated cost of the project is anticipated to be $15.6 million. Over the lifespan of the project, the cost is disseminated through electric rates to the five million customers located in ATC’s service area. Additional information can be found on the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin website, under docket number 137-CE-191.
