Chandler-Old Mead Road improves electric reliability in Escanaba area

DE PERE, Wis. – A new six-mile electric transmission line and a new substation have been placed in service in the Escanaba, Michigan, area.

The 138,000-volt transmission line runs from the Chandler Substation northwest of the city to the new Old Mead Road Substation located near the NewPage mill.

“The new line will help improve electric reliability,” said David Hovde, local relations consultant at American Transmission Co. “Previously, transmission facilities in the area were often overloaded; they also were so critical to maintaining service to customers that it was difficult to take an outage to perform maintenance on the system.”

Construction on the $25 million project began in summer 2013.
