MORGAN-WERNER WEST

Overview

ATC is now constructing a new 50-mile transmission line from the Morgan Substation south of Oconto Falls to a new substation - called Werner West - in the New London area. When completed, the Morgan-Central Wisconsin-Werner West line will relieve congestion on facilities in and north of Green Bay, resulting in additional transfer capability and greater electric reliability for the area. In addition, it will provide capability for transmission service for a new power plant being built in the Wausau area. The new line will intersect another new 345-kilovolt line (Gardner Park to Central Wisconsin Project) that would link a new substation, Gardner Park, located just south of the existing Weston Power Plant to the newly approved Central Wisconsin Substation in central Shawano County.

Northeastern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan are served electrically by 345- and 138-kilovolt transmission lines that are some of the most constrained in the ATC system. These constraints have limited ATC's ability to move power in and out of the Upper Peninsula, and have caused overloading on other parts of the electric system.

At a glance
Communities affected: Town of Morgan in Oconto County; City of Clintonville, Village of Embarrass and the towns of Lebanon and Matteson in Waupaca County; the towns of Green Valley, Washington, Waukechon and Belle Plaine in Shawano County and towns of Maple Creek, Deer Creek, and village of Bear Creek and City of New London in Outagamie County; northeastern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan will benefit from a more stable and reliable system
Length of line: Approximately 50 miles
End points: Morgan Substation (southwest of Oconto Falls) Central Wisconsin Switching Station (proposed to be located adjacent to the Badger Substation in the Town of Belle Plaine) to Werner West (New London)
Voltage: 345 kilovolts
Type of structure: Single steel pole  view pole (616k pdf)
Height of poles: 105 to 155 feet
Status of project: Construction 50 percent complete. Visit www.atc-gcmw.com for further details.
